Student Finance Deadlines 2026 and 2027: Every UK Date

Application opening dates, on-time deadlines and final cut-off dates for Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland and SAAS, split by academic year and by new versus continuing student.

Last verified against official sources: 8 September 2026

The dates, in one box

  • 2026/27 (courses starting autumn 2026): the on-time deadlines have passed. Student Finance England’s was 15 May 2026 for new students and 19 June 2026 for continuing students. You can still apply.
  • The final cut-off for 2026/27 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 31 May 2027 for a course that started between 1 August and 31 December 2026. In Scotland it is 31 March 2027.
  • 2027 courses in England: applications opened in September 2026 for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027, under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. For courses starting from 1 August 2027 you can apply from spring 2027.
  • Missing the on-time deadline does not cost you the money. It only risks the timing: funding is no longer guaranteed to be in place for the first day of term.

There is no single UK student finance deadline. There are four funding bodies, two deadline types (an on-time deadline and a final legal cut-off), and two different applicant groups. Most of the confusion online comes from pages that quote one date without saying which academic year, which nation or which kind of student it belongs to. This page separates all of them.

Two dates matter for every applicant. The first is the on-time deadline: apply by it and your funding body aims to have your money ready for the start of term. The second is the final deadline, set in law at nine months after the start of your academic year. Miss the first and you are late; miss the second and you lose that year’s funding entirely.

If your question is about how early you should realistically apply rather than the published dates, read when to apply for student finance, which covers the timing strategy. For the mechanics of the form itself, see the step-by-step guide to applying for student finance.

What is the student finance deadline?

For the 2026/27 academic year the Student Finance England deadline was Friday 15 May 2026 for new students and Friday 19 June 2026 for returning students. Both have passed. Applications for 2026/27 remain open, and the absolute final deadline for an autumn 2026 course start is 31 May 2027.

Those two May and June dates are recommended deadlines, not legal ones. The Student Loans Company sets them so that a complete application has enough processing time before September. They are not the point at which the service closes.

Two deadlines, two different consequences

  • On-time deadline (May/June): miss it and your money may arrive after term starts. You still get the full amount eventually.
  • Final deadline (nine months after the academic year begins): miss it and you cannot be funded for that year at all.

Student finance deadlines 2026/27 by nation

Every 2026/27 full-time undergraduate on-time deadline has now passed. England’s were 15 May 2026 (new) and 19 June 2026 (continuing); Wales 29 May and 26 June 2026; Northern Ireland 30 April and 30 June 2026; Scotland recommended 30 June 2026 for both groups. Applications for 2026/27 are still open in all four nations. The deadlines differ because each nation runs its own scheme, so Northern Irish students should also read how Student Finance NI works, and Welsh students how Student Finance Wales differs from the England system.

SAAS (Scotland)Spring 202630 June 202630 June 202631 March 2027

Dates above are for full-time undergraduate funding. Part-time undergraduate applications for 2026/27 opened later — 11 May 2026 in Wales — and postgraduate applications for 2026/27 opened 20 July 2026 in Wales.

Scotland works differently. SAAS does not publish separate new and continuing deadlines. It states only that an application received after 30 June may not be processed before the course starts, and that the year closes on 31 March. Scotland’s final cut-off is therefore two months earlier than the rest of the UK.

When does student finance open for 2027?

In England, applications for courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027 opened in September 2026, under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. If your course starts from 1 August 2027 — which covers almost everyone starting university in autumn 2027 — you will be able to apply from spring 2027.

This is a genuine change rather than a rebranding. The Lifelong Learning Entitlement replaces the old application route for English students on courses beginning on or after 1 January 2027, and it covers most undergraduate courses, some postgraduate-level qualifications such as PGCEs and integrated master’s degrees, and some further education courses previously funded by Advanced Learner Loans.

Under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, the deadline is expressed per course or module rather than per academic year. You must apply by whichever comes first: the last day of the ninth month of your course or module year, or the date your course or module ends.

What this means in practice

  • Starting a course in January to July 2027 in England: you can apply now.
  • Starting in autumn 2027 in England: applications open in spring 2027.
  • You do not need a confirmed offer from a university or college to apply.

Student Finance Wales, Student Finance NI and SAAS had not published 2027/28 opening dates when this page was last verified. All three have historically opened full-time undergraduate applications in the spring before the academic year: for 2026/27 both Wales and Northern Ireland opened on 23 March 2026.

Reapplying: deadlines for continuing students

Continuing students must reapply for student finance every single year — it is never automatic. For 2026/27 the reapplication deadlines were 19 June 2026 (England), 26 June 2026 (Wales), 30 June 2026 (Northern Ireland) and 30 June 2026 (Scotland). Continuing-student deadlines fall roughly a month later than new-student deadlines because your identity and eligibility are already on file.

What you actually have to do when you reapply

A reapplication is much shorter than a first application. Most of your details are carried forward, and you sign in to the same online account you used before. You confirm your personal details are still correct, update your year of study, confirm your address and bank details, and if your funding is income-assessed your parent or partner reconfirms their income for the relevant tax year.

SAAS is explicit that you must tick the tuition fee box on every annual application, because that is what allows you to matriculate.

The single most common reason a returning student has no money in week one is that they assumed their funding rolled over. It does not. If you did not submit a fresh application for the year you are about to start, nothing will be paid.

Before you reapply, it is worth checking what the year will actually cost you in repayments later. Our student loan calculators model the repayment side of each additional year of borrowing.

What happens if you miss the student finance deadline?

Nothing is cancelled. If you miss the May or June on-time deadline you can still apply and you are still entitled to the same funding. What you lose is the guarantee that the money will be in place for the start of term. GOV.UK puts it plainly: you might get less money than you expected if you apply close to the start of your course or after it has started.

You are paid the minimum amount first

If your household income has not been assessed in time, you are initially paid the minimum Maintenance Loan that everyone is entitled to regardless of income. Once your household income is verified, the balance you are owed is paid on top.

Your Tuition Fee Loan is far less exposed. It is paid directly to your university in instalments after you register, so a late Maintenance Loan rarely puts your place at risk — it puts your rent at risk.

What to do if you are already late

  1. Apply anyway, today. Processing time only starts when the application is submitted.
  2. Submit a complete application. Incomplete applications sit in a queue waiting for you, not for the funding body.
  3. Chase your parent or partner immediately if your funding is income-assessed. Their section is separate and is the most common single cause of delay.
  4. Tell your university. Most institutions run a hardship fund or short-term loan specifically for students whose finance is delayed.
  5. Check your online account regularly and respond the same day to any request for evidence.

Avoid the errors that add weeks to a late application — the most common student finance application mistakes are almost all fixable before you submit. Once it is in, you can follow progress with our guide to student finance application statuses.

When does student finance close? The nine-month rule

Student finance closes nine months after the first day of your academic year. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland that gives a fixed final deadline based on when your course started — 31 May for the common August-to-December start. In Scotland, SAAS instead publishes a single closing date for the whole year: 31 March 2027 for 2026/27.

Your course starts betweenFinal deadline (the following year)For a 2026/27 course that means
1 August and 31 December31 May31 May 2027
1 January and 31 March30 September30 September 2027
1 April and 30 June31 December31 December 2027
1 July and 31 July31 March31 March 2028

Applying at the very end of that window is a poor idea even though it is legal. A first payment made in May for a year that began the previous September does nothing for the rent you already paid.

Which academic year am I applying for?

You apply for the academic year in which your course year starts, not the year you are in now. A course starting in September 2026 is a 2026/27 application; a course starting in September 2027 is a 2027/28 application. This single distinction is behind most misapplied deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

When is the student finance deadline 2026?

For the 2026/27 academic year the deadlines were 15 May 2026 for new students and 19 June 2026 for continuing students in England, 29 May and 26 June 2026 in Wales, 30 April and 30 June 2026 in Northern Ireland, and 30 June 2026 in Scotland. All have passed, but applications for 2026/27 are still open until 31 May 2027 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 31 March 2027 in Scotland.

Can I still apply for student finance after the deadline?

Yes. The May and June dates are recommended deadlines, not closing dates. You can apply up to nine months after the first day of your academic year. Your entitlement is unchanged; only the timing of payment is at risk, and you may be paid the minimum Maintenance Loan first while your household income is assessed.

When does student finance open for 2027?

In England, applications for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 opened in September 2026 under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. For courses starting from 1 August 2027, applications open in spring 2027. Student Finance Wales, Student Finance NI and SAAS had not published their 2027/28 opening dates as at 8 September 2026.

Do I have to reapply for student finance every year?

Yes. Student finance is never renewed automatically. Every continuing student must submit a fresh application for each year of their course. For 2026/27 the reapplication deadlines were 19 June 2026 in England, 26 June 2026 in Wales, and 30 June 2026 in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

When does student finance close for the 2026/27 year?

For a course that started between 1 August and 31 December 2026, applications close on 31 May 2027 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. SAAS closes 2026/27 applications on 31 March 2027 for all Scottish applicants. After the closing date you cannot be funded for that academic year at all.

Is the student finance deadline the same across the UK?

No. The four UK funding bodies set their own dates. For 2026/27 the new-student deadlines ranged from 30 April 2026 in Northern Ireland to 30 June 2026 in Scotland, a two-month spread. Scotland also has an earlier final closing date, 31 March rather than 31 May.
