Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 October 2026

Introduction

At Student Loan Calculator UK, we take your privacy seriously. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use our website.

We are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected in accordance with UK data protection laws, including the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).

Who is responsible. The data controller for studentloancalculator.uk is Student Loan Calculator UK, the operator of this website. You can reach us through our contact page or at [email protected].

Information We Collect

Automatically Collected Information

Our own servers do not run accounts or log-ins. The calculators work in your browser: the figures you type are not sent to us. Google Analytics counts visits by default, and Microsoft Clarity does so only with your consent (see below). They collect information about your device and visit, including:

  • IP address (used for approximate location; Google Analytics 4 does not store full IP addresses)
  • Browser type and version, operating system and screen size
  • Pages visited, time spent, clicks, scrolling and mouse or touch movement
  • Referring website

If you refuse consent in the cookie message, Google Analytics stops setting cookies and Clarity is not loaded. Google Analytics may still receive limited, cookieless pings (for example the page address and a timestamp) because its tag stays on the page in a consent-denied state.

Saved calculator inputs. To save you retyping, the calculators store your last inputs in your own browser (local storage, kept for up to 90 days). This stays on your device and is never sent to us. Your cookie choice is stored in your browser by Google's consent tool (the cookie FCCDCF, up to 13 months).

Cookies and Tracking

The site does not need cookies to work. We use two optional categories. In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland we ask for your choice with Google's consent message, a consent tool certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. Analytics from Google Analytics is on by default so we can count visits, and you can switch it off by refusing consent in that message. Microsoft Clarity and personalised advertising run only with your consent:

  • Analytics: Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity, to see which pages are used and where visitors get stuck.
  • Advertising: Google AdSense, to show ads and to personalise them.

Before you choose we set Google Analytics cookies, but no Clarity or advertising cookies, and Microsoft Clarity is not loaded. If you refuse consent we set no Google Analytics, Clarity or advertising cookies, and any we set are removed. Google AdSense still shows ads, but only non-personalised or limited ones, which do not use your browsing history. Outside the UK, the EEA and Switzerland no consent message is shown and these tools run normally.

Withdrawing or changing your choice. Use the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page (or the button below) to reopen the consent message at any time. Refusing after having consented switches the tags back to denied and deletes their cookies from this site. Withdrawing is as easy as giving consent. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

A cookie-by-cookie list is in our Cookie Policy.

Third-Party Services

Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC)

Purpose: measuring visits and page use. Sets (unless you refuse consent) the cookies _ga and _ga_*, which last up to 2 years. Event data is held in Google Analytics for no more than 14 months. Google may process data outside the UK; see the Google Privacy Policy.

Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft Corporation)

Purpose: session recordings and heatmaps, to find confusing parts of our pages. Loaded only with your consent. Sets _clck (up to 1 year) and _clsk (1 day). Clarity masks form input fields, and recordings are kept for 30 days and aggregate data for 13 months by Clarity's default. See the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Google AdSense and Google Funding Choices

Purpose: showing advertising, which pays for this free site. With your consent, Google and its ad partners may set advertising cookies (for example __gads, up to 13 months) and personalise ads. Without it, only non-personalised or limited ads are shown. Google Funding Choices is Google's consent-message service; it loads with AdSense and shows the consent message. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services.

Contact form

We do not run a newsletter. If you use the contact form, your name, email address and message are handled by Formspree and delivered to us. We use them only to reply or send what you asked for, and delete them on request.

Other

We do not use Google Tag Manager, Facebook or other social pixels, or any other tracking service. Fonts are served from our own domain.

Legal Basis for Processing

We process your data on the following legal bases:

  • Your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a) and PECR regulation 6) for Microsoft Clarity and advertising cookies
  • Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) in counting visits with Google Analytics so we can see which pages are used; you can object at any time by refusing consent in the cookie message (Cookie settings link in the footer)
  • Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) in answering messages you send us and keeping the site secure
  • Legal obligations under UK data protection laws

Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Right to access your personal data
  • Right to rectification of inaccurate data
  • Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten")
  • Right to restrict processing
  • Right to data portability

To use these rights, contact us as set out below. If you are not happy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint (helpline 0303 123 1113).
